Ferraro Isn't Sorry

After suggesting that Obama is only ahead in the democratic campaign because he's a black man, ex-vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro isn't sorry. If anything, she's standing by her comments, and repeating them to anyone that will listen, on talk shows and in newspapers around the world. The Obama camp calls the suggestion absurd. Obama put it best when he said "I think that if anybody was looking for the quickest path to the presidency, they would not say 'I want to be an African-American man named Barack Obama.' I do not think that is in the handbook for running for president,"
Conspicuous by their silence are the Clintons, who have quietly agreed to disagree with Ferraro, but have not reprimanded her and have taken no punitive action thus far. When a high profile member of the Obama campaign casually referred to Hillary as a 'monster' on a British radio show a short time ago, she promptly resigned at the insistence of Mr. Obama. Why hasn't Hillary taken a similar tack with Ferraro?
Some people think it's because the Clinton campaign wants to turn it into a race vs gender campaign as the crucial Pennsylvania vote approaches. Neither of them are in a position to put Obama into the 'Black guy' box without repercussions, but they can sit idly by while one of their henchwomen does. Ferraro is managing to paint Hillary as the one facing social barriers, of being an 'older' white woman in a man's world. Some believe that she's managing to woo whites by tapping into a perceived white resentment against programs such as affirmative action, etc. It's a desperate bid, and these are desperate times for Hillary following her loss in Mississippi. This thing is going to be decided in the next six weeks, and Hill is fighting for her political life.
